External Conflicts Fought
External conflicts fought is one of the 23 indicators of peace measured by the Global Peace Index. It is an ‘external’ indicator of peace, meaning it measures peace outside a country.
Definition
This indicator measures the number and duration of conflicts a country is involved in, outside its legal borders and a country’s role in each conflict. Conflicts are not counted if they have already been included under the internal conflicts fought indicator.
Scoring
The External conflicts fought indicator is scored on a scale from 1 (no external conflict) to 5 (very high levels of external conflict).
The score is based on the number of external conflicts a country is involved in, the conflicts duration, and the nature of the country’s role.
If a conflict is classified as a war (1,000+ battle-related deaths) it receives a higher score, than if it is an armed conflict (15 – 999 battle-related deaths).
If the country is a primary party to the conflict, the conflict receives a higher score, than if it is a secondary party (supporting the primary party). If a country is a party to a force covered by a relevant United Nations Security Council Resolution, then the conflict score is lower again.
Source
This indicator is calculated based on the Battle-Related Deaths Dataset produced by the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP). UCDP have recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s.
This indicator is calculated over a five year period, and is two years lagging.
